1. What is Account Updater? |
Account Updater is a CSG Forte service that helps merchants prevent interruptions to recurring transactions by automatically updating eligible cardholder account information when payment cards are replaced or changed.
This value-added service is designed to keep stored payment card information for merchants that process recurring or card-on-file transactions. When a customer's card is replaced, expires, is reissued, reported lost/stolen, or the account number changes, Account Updater automatically receives updated information from participating card networks and updates the card data associated with the merchant's stored payment methods. This helps reduce payment declines, prevent service interruptions, and improve recurring payment success rates.
1.1. Who is eligible to use Account Updater? |
Account Updater is available to merchants that:
- Process recurring or stored (card-on-file) transactions.
- Use supported credit and debit card networks.
- Meet network participation and compliance requirements.
The service is best suited for subscription-based, membership-based, or repeat billing business models.

2.1. Does Account Updater guarantee successful payment processing?? |
|
|
No. Account Updater does not guarantee that payment will be approved or successfully processed.
Account Updater is designed to improve authorization rates by helping ensure that stored card information remains current when card details change, such as after a reissuance or account update. However, payment approval ultimately depends on multiple factors determined by the issuing bank and the transaction itself, including available funds, account status, fraud controls, and issuer-specific authorization rules.
As a result, while Account Updater can reduce declines caused by outdated card information, it does not eliminate all payment failures and should not be considered a guarantee of successful payment processing.
2.2. How does Account Updater differ from Verify/Validate? |
|
|
Distinct but complementary functions are performed by Account Updater and Verify/Validate within the payment lifecycle. Both services are designed to enhance payment success rates and improve data accuracy; however, different payment methods are supported, and each service is applied at a different stage of the transaction process.
Category | Account Updater | Verify/Validate: |
Payment Type Supported | Supports credit and debit card transactions (e.g., Visa, MasterCard, Discover). | Supports ACH/eCheck transactions based on bank account information. |
Primary Function | Automatically updates stored cardholder information when card details change (e.g., expiration date, account number, or status). | Validates bank account information to confirm it is accurate and eligible for processing before a transaction is initiated. |
Position in the Payment Lifecycle | Operates after card data has been stored (post-storage update process). | Operates before a transaction is processed (pre-transaction validation control). |
Core Objective | Maintains accurate card-on-file data to reduce declines and support recurring payment continuity. | Reduces the risk of ACH returns by verifying account validity and status prior to payment submission. |
Dependency Model | Dependent on card network and issuer participation to provide updated account data. | Dependent on validation services and bank data sources to confirm account status. |
Outcome | Returns updated card credentials when available (e.g., new account number, updated expiration date, or closure status). | Returns a validation result indicating whether a bank account can be used for payment processing. |
3. How does Account Updater work?? |
|
|
Account Updater operates by securely comparing stored card data against information provided by participating card networks and issuing banks.
- Updated card details (such as expiration dates or account numbers) are retrieved when available.
- Eligible records are automatically updated within the merchant’s stored payment methods.
- Updates are typically processed on a scheduled (batch) basis rather than in real time.
This process helps maintain accurate payment information and supports uninterrupted recurring billing.
3.1. What types of updates are supported?? |
|
|
Account Updater may provide updates for:
- Expiration date changes
- Card reissuance or replacement
- Updated card numbers
- Account closures
Availability of updates depends on issuer participation and network coverage. .
4. How does Account Updater integrate with other CSG Forte payment solutions? |
|
|
Account Updater is designed to seamlessly integrate with CSG Forte’s complete payment ecosystem, supporting merchants that use multiple payment and billing solutions.
It works in conjunction with the following CSG Forte platforms:
- Dex: A cloud-based platform that streamlines payment management, enabling efficient oversight of transactions and stored payment methods.
- Checkout: An embedded payment processing solution that allows merchants to securely accept payments directly within their websites.
- BillPay: An omnichannel payment solution that provides customers with a secure and consistent payment experience across multiple channels.
Through this integration, Account Updater ensures that stored card information used across these platforms remains accurate and up to date. This helps maintain uninterrupted recurring payments, reduce declines, and improve the overall payment experience for both merchants and customers. .
