Description of Issue and Symptoms


If the masking configuration on the reader is set incorrectly, Secure Web Pay Checkout and Virtual Terminal may misidentify certain VISA card types. Specifically, the system may not properly distinguish between VISA STANDARD and VISA DEBIT cards. This misidentification is especially problematic for merchants enrolled in the VISA TAX program, as it can result in incorrect service fees being applied to transactions. To avoid this, the reader must be configured with the correct masking profile.

Correct masking profile: MASK_6ZERO4


Resolution

Before making any changes, ensure that both the Secure Web Pay Checkout and Virtual Terminal websites are completely closed. Leaving them open may cause conflicts during reconfiguration.

Follow these steps carefully:

  1. Access the Configuration Tool

  2. Install the Configuration Program

    • Run the downloaded setup.exe file.

    • Follow any installation prompts to complete the setup.

  3. Launch and Connect

    • Open the installed program.

    • On the welcome screen, click “Use Public Account”.

    • Select “Detect” so the program can locate your connected reader.

    • From the Device List drop-down, choose the correct reader model.

  4. Update Reader Configuration

    • In the Reader Config Options drop-down, select the profile: MASK_6ZERO4

    • Click “Change Config” and wait until the program confirms that the update has been completed successfully.
       

  5. Reset the Reader

    • Disconnect the reader from the computer.

    • Close the MagTek configuration program completely.

    • Wait at least 30 seconds before reconnecting the reader.

  6. Verify Functionality

    • Reconnect the reader to your computer.

    • Open Secure Web Pay Checkout or Virtual Terminal.

    • Perform a test swipe to confirm that VISA card types are now recognized correctly.


Best Practices

  • Always ensure you are applying the latest reader configuration utility from MagTek.

  • If multiple readers are in use, repeat the process for each device to ensure consistency.

  • For merchants in the VISA TAX program, perform regular verification of card type detection to avoid fee miscalculations.

  • If the issue persists after reconfiguration, contact MagTek Support for assistance.
