eDynamo - Data Flow Overview

Modified on Thu, 4 Sep at 12:16 PM

The MagTek eDynamo provides merchants with the flexibility to securely accept a variety of payment card technologies, including magnetic stripe cards and EMV chip cards. Designed for both stationary and mobile use, the eDynamo supports multiple operating systems and connection types, giving merchants the ability to accept payments on-the-go or at a countertop workstation.

The device connects via:

  • Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) – supported on iOS, Android, and Windows devices.

  • USB – supported on Windows PCs and tablets.

This flexibility makes the eDynamo ideal for businesses that need secure, reliable payment acceptance in different environments.

Use Cases

The eDynamo is suitable for a wide range of merchant environments:

  • Countertop Payments – Docked or connected via USB, providing a stable solution for customer-facing card transactions.

  • Mobile Payments – Paired via Bluetooth with tablets or smartphones for on-the-go payment collection.

Your exact setup will depend on your operating system, device type, and connection preference.

Supported Operating Systems and Connection Types

The eDynamo supports the following configurations:

DeviceConnection TypeOperating System
Windows PCUSBWindows 7, 8.1, 10
Windows TabletUSB / Bluetooth LEMicrosoft Surface Go (or any tablet running a supported OS)
iPad / iPhoneBluetooth LE*iOS 7.1 or newer
Android Phones/TabletsBluetooth LE*Android 4.4.2 or newer

When using Forte Checkout via Bluetooth on iOS or Android devices, merchants must:

  1. Download and install the MagTek Wedget keyboard application.

  2. Select the Wedget keyboard before swiping or dipping a card.

  3. Submit a ticket to Forte Technical Support to have the device registered in MagTek’s Wedget database.

Windows Setup

Merchants using Windows PCs or tablets can connect their eDynamo via either USB or Bluetooth LE. This setup allows for both swipe and EMV chip transactions.

  • Works with:

    • Forte Checkout

    • Dex (USB only)

    • BillPay (USB only)

    • Custom POS applications

For countertop payment acceptance, merchants may use an optional docking station, which stabilizes the device and makes swiping or dipping cards easier for customers.

iOS and Android Setup

For iOS and Android devices, merchants connect via Bluetooth Low Energy (LE).

Setup requires:

  1. Installing the MagTek Wedget keyboard extension.

  2. Configuring the application (Forte Checkout or custom POS) to accept input from the Wedget keyboard or from a MagTek SDK.

This setup supports both Forte Checkout and custom applications that integrate through Forte’s APIs. For step-by-step instructions, see Setting Up an eDynamo in Forte’s DevDocs.

Data Flow Overview

The following describes how a transaction is processed when using the eDynamo:

  1. The cardholder swipes or dips their card into the eDynamo.

  2. The eDynamo encrypts the card data and transmits it securely to the POS application via Bluetooth or USB.

  3. The POS application formats the transaction data and sends it to Forte.

  4. Forte communicates with MagTek’s Magensa Decryption Service to decrypt the encrypted card data.

  5. Forte then transmits the decrypted data to the payment processor for authorization.

  6. The processor returns the authorization response to Forte.

  7. Forte relays the result back to the POS application, completing the transaction flow.

This secure data path ensures that sensitive payment card information is always encrypted at the point of entry and never exposed in clear text.

✅ With support for multiple operating systems, flexible connection types, and secure transaction handling, the MagTek eDynamo is a powerful solution for merchants who need reliable, EMV-compliant payment acceptance across both mobile and countertop environments.
