Support for Discover contactless card acceptance was mandated for all newly-deployed
terminals that support contactless for other payment networks as of April 2016, in
compliance with Section 2.6 No Less Favorable Treatment and Section 2.7 Equal Treatment
of Cards Issued of the Discover Operating Regulations.
Effective October 18, 2019, newly-deployed POS devices that support contactless card
acceptance must not support contactless magnetic stripe technology. All newly-deployed
POS devices in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean that support contactless card
payments must only support contactless EMV technology.
POS devices in use as of October 18, 2019, that support contactless EMV technology and
contactless magnetic stripe may continue to do so. POS devices that only support
contactless magnetic stripe on Discover Global Network must not remove support of the
magnetic swipe capability until migration to contactless EMV technology is complete.
